The project involves the repair & rehabilitation of the Ayala Bridge super-structures & substructures to conform to the current code. Aside from strengthening the bridge & raising it by 70 cm to increase vertical navigation clearance, the project involved the innovative revised substructure /seismic design. State-of-the-art Sliding Bearings & Fluid Viscous Dampers (commonly called isolators and dampers) were incorporated between the superstructure and substructure to enhance seismic performance. Bored piles were constructed at the approaches to hold & minimize lateral movement of the superstructure during earthquake thereby protecting the substructure from damage. The concrete deck slab on the bridge was also strengthened by overlaying.
